I'm in Punxsutawney PA on this Halloween night. And, while I've yet to see furry Phil dressed up as Freddy Krueger...I did witness another slice of pure Americana an hour or so ago.
On this rainy night, hundreds of costumed children and their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles took part in a parade down the main street. Fire Trucks, Police Cars and the occassional adorned tractor led the way and brought up the rear as the Junior and Senior High Marching Bands played. The parade ended at the Town Square where there was a "Best Costume" competition...and the kids each received a 50 cent piece. And then, it was off to the neighborhoods for some chocolate.
I posted on this in an e-newsletter back in the spring of 2004...this "Americana" thing that sadly seems to be slipping away. But, it's still going strong in small towns like Punxsutawney and Holland MI.
And here's hoping that it always will.
