When I took the helm of the Greater Madison CVB years ago, I spent a lonely three months in market before my family moved to the Mad City to join me. But, as difficult as it was to be away from wife and daughters, it also provided me time to immerse myself in the City. I tried out the best restaurants. Hit the music clubs. Hung out on campus. Drove the city (a lot). Walked the Capitol Square and State Street. Went to a lot of social functions to meet and greet as many people as I could.
If moving up means moving to a new town, I encourage you to do the same to get a true sense and understanding of your product before your family joins you and needs your attention during their acclimation process.
Former MPI EVP David Dubois just landed the Fort Worth CVB CEO gig...and is taking that concept one step further. He's planning on living in the City's hotels while he and his wife look for a new house.
Cool idea...and, when the opportunity comes for you to jump towns, you should strongly consider following in his shoes.
