Maybe she desperately needed the money? Most part-time employees don't get insurance or sick time.

Oh...I get that. And, that's part of my point. If she's part-time and clearly too sick to fulfill her responsibilities...she should be sent home WITH PAY. Managers that don't get this fact shouldn't be managers. Companies that don't get this fact don't deserve our business.
