In my presentations to communities across the United States, I suggest that Destination Marketing Organizations have done a fairly creditable job quantifying the Sales and Room Taxes generated by their Visitor Economies...but a lousy job at identifying the Property Taxes for which Tourism is responsible. That's likely because divining such a number isn't easy.
But, the DMO pros at Visit Pensacola did the hard work...and the number is as big as I ever imagined.
46 percent of all property taxes in the county can be attributed to the lodging sector. And, that's JUST the hotels. Imagine the additional taxes generated by businesses in the other 20-or so industry sectors generally connected to the Tourism industry.
Kudos to Steve Hayes and the gang at Visit Pensacola for going the extra mile to show that Tourism Works.
