Tough times can bring out the best in the creative Destination Marketing mind.
Jerry Holt and the gang at the Amarillo CVC have recently launched a $10,000 sweepstakes to drive overnight stays. 10 lucky visitors will each win $1000 between now and September...and each overnight stay increases one's chances at the loot.
Say what you will about "buying the business." The real beauty of the promotion is that it works on three powerful levels. First, the CVC is building an insanely valuable database of visitors that have spent at least a night in Amarillo (and, one would presume, can be enticed to return). Second, the lure of $1000 is bound to increase visitation during the promotion.
And, best of all...it will generate well over $10,000 of media value when the story gets picked up by media outlets like Gadling and others.
Well played, my friends.
