As I was searching for a link to share my team with my readers, I was dismayed to find that this once powerhouse national juggernaut is apparently no more. After terrorizing the National Women's Football Association for eight years (making the playoffs every year, with a cumulative record of 65-13), they changed names and switched leagues for the '09 season...and then dropped off the face of the earth.
I was there for their very first game in Pensacola while working with the then start-up SouthCoastUSA. It was a free night in town as I waited to catch a flight home the next morning. I saw the newspaper article, announcing that this would be the first game of women's pro football...and decided, what the hell.
And my jaw was on my lap most of the way through the game, as 5,000 of us watched the incredible Jill Penderghest and her team simply annihilate the opposition. This wasn't a side show. This was the real deal.
So sad that they are apparently no more. I wore the Power baseball cap that I bought that night in 2001 tonight for my softball game with the inimitable Strangegloves in honor of "my girls."
We won convincingly...just like the Power used to do. I guess I'll keep wearing their hat all the way to our playoffs.
