Never mind that most of the lyrics make no sense. "You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl," is all you need to know that this song has got a certain 'tude...for the 1970s.
But, that's what is so cool about this primal rock anthem from a simpler time. It's got a krunk before there was krunk. And, in the original by Marc Bolan and T. Rex, there is a subversive sexuality to the song (made even more obvious by Marc's performance that most Americans never saw in this clip from BBC's "Top of the Pops").
Years later, Robert Palmer and a couple guys from Duran Duran covered the classic and made it their own. Robert's smokey cool and the "Taylor brothers'" angry guitars turned it into a huge hit.
So you get a double on Music Friday...because "you're windy and wild and you got the blues in your shoes and your stockings."
Bang a Gong.
And 10 points for identifying the keyboard player in the T. Rex video....
Is that Elton John?
