Can it really be? It was 70 years ago today that one of the most evocative musical talents of the rock and soul era was born. He wrote "Respect," the song that helped make Aretha Franklin a star (though, as my friend Kyle Henderson often notes, with a decidedly different slant and style). He could shake the rafters...and make girls swoon with his ballads.
He also wrote and recorded "Dock of the Bay," whistling where future lyrics were supposed to be inserted. He never had the chance as, three days later, his plane crashed on its approach into Madison to play The Factory.
Here's to the amazing Otis Redding, who should be celebrating his 70th with us all today. And our Music Friday feature goes back to a BBC TV performance in 1966 with Eric Burdon. And it so cooks.
And one of my all time favorites, Try A Little Tenderness
