Back in the days when the music you heard on radio stations was selected by local professionals (and not national consultants), you heard some amazingly diverse talent.
As Fleetwood Mac began its march to superstardom, our station also focused on Bob Welch. While we played Mac tunes...we also acknowledged that Bob was a huge part of positioning the band for its meteoric rise.
In the two albums preceding the introduction of Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham to the roster, Bob Welch and Christine McVie had established a very cool (yet mostly overlooked) vibe. Amazing tracks such as "Emerald Eyes," "Hypnotized," "Angel" and "Come a Little Bit Closer" were so sadly overlooked by most radio programmers...but were staples on college radio stations like my WKCO.
Welch was such an amazing talent, whose star burned brightly...but far too shortly in the late 1970s. He so sadly chose to end his life earlier this month, leaving behind an amazing collection of art.
On his breakout solo record "French Kiss," he played off on three versions of the song "Lose My Heart." The first...and the painfully perfect last version...are captured on this YouTube offering.
RIP, Bob. I always loved your work.
