For over a decade now, Americans have allowed their civil liberties to be stripped away, bit by bit, as the TSA has, bit by bit, amped up its draconian efforts to prove to the world that it can prevent another 9/11.
The old-school scanners were a nuisance. The newer "legs-apart-hands-in-the-air-let-us-see-your-sex-parts" scanners are beyond that. I mean, really, how much of an advance in terror security can they be if a paper ticket in my pocket can throw up a positive ID that I'm trying to blow up a plane?
There is also some pretty serious evidence emerging that the radiation thrown out by these "backscatter" units IS harmful, carving months (if not years) off the lives of frequent fliers. Yeah...those that have the most frequent flier miles to burn will have the least chance to use them.
TSA has announced their intent to pull these radiation beasts out of the busiest airports...and put them in the airports in the hinterland. Which is just insane.
Time to say "enough is enough?" A movement has begun to deliver that message and today is Day One.
It's the National Opt-Out Week. Just Say No. Gum up the lines. Push back. Let them feel you up. Blow them a kiss when they're done.
And, if you'd rather not...you should probably get to the airport a little earlier than usual. Because there will be a bunch of people who will.
