One of the Destination Marketing Organizations that was terminated last year was the Davis County UT CVB. Their County Board, working from a complete lack of understanding of the destination marketing industry, simply pulled the plug.
On the surface, to the unsophisticated, the comparative numbers utilized to deep six the Bureau made perfect sense. To those that understand how this industry works...not so much. The Bureau fell victim to a well orchestrated spin that it, sadly, wasn't prepared to repel.
Then the County hired a consulting company to tell them what they should be doing to attract more visitors.
Let's first understand that the primary (stated) reason the CVB was killed was because they were accused of missing goals on filling the Conventioon Center.
The consultant's recommendation: Focus on families and locals.
Huh?
No...really. Huh?
I don't disagree with the consultant's assessment. Families and Locals may well be the sweet spot for Davis County.
But, it's got nothing to do with why the County killed its DMO.
Sigh.
OMG! Bet the hoteliers loved that assessment! It seems the first order of business is to articulate with the support of hoteliers the Mission statement for the CVB!
