Over the holidays, I had the chance to catch up on some reading. You too?
I often use my time on planes to shred the magazines I receive. I'm sure Delta flight attendants know me by the trail of discarded pages I leave behind (and my penchant for thanking the pilots as I disembark).
Then, I consume what attracted my eye when I have more time to consider the content.
Maybe you caught this…but I was intrigued when I read that Inc. named Airbnb "Company of the Year."
Really?
Even the author of the piece seemed somewhat uneasy with the designation: "Some might find it unsettling for Inc. to champion a company that continually disregards the rules…(but) not all laws are equal…with a few notable exceptions, prohibitions on economic activity between consenting adults do not long stand."
Has it come to this? That, in the race to be "hip," our business media fawns over a company that breaks the rules and puts other rule-abiding businesses at risk? Is the concept of disruption that alluring?
Using Inc.'s rationale, maybe Terri and I should launch a business that only employs men and women with MBAs that are pulling down $250,000+ a year to provide sexual services to other MBAs that are making $250,000+ a year. With those parameters, no one in their right mind can charge that the prostitution is demeaning or exploiting the provider. Those making $250,000+ clearly don't need the money. Hey, we're just creating a platform for people to share (for money) what they're not using. So, could we be the next "Company of the Year?"
Doubtful.
Inc.? I expected better.
