One could say that the founders of Airbnb didn't know what they didn't know (I know...that's a reach). But, to hear San Francisco Travel's Joe D’Alessandro tell it, Airbnb was never opposed to its users paying Room Tax and abiding by the same laws that traditional hotels did. It just didn't know how that all worked.
In a fascinating interview with Greg Oates in today's edition of Skift, Joe outlines how San Francisco Travel worked with Airbnb to play by the same rules as hotels in return for being welcomed into the fold by both the DMO and the hotel community. The result during Super Bowl 50: 5,000 Airbnb stays in 40 municipalities in the Bay Area.
It's all about a level playing field. Something that Uber still hasn't quite gotten it's head around.
