When he cancelled all of this year's tour dates a few months ago, his fans knew what that meant, for he lived to play. And, last weekend, Gregg Allman departed terra firma.
Through his years as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and as a solo performer, there was no one more authentic an artist than Gregg. The grittiness of his trademark vocals and his command of instrument set him apart as an icon of the rock music scene through its formative years until his death.
Except...for that brief period where rock became respectable enough to feature on TV variety shows. And, because the rules of the entertainment game were being designed in real time, who was Gregg not to get swept up into the glitter of the Cher show. And, then into Cher's bed and life. And, then to produce an album together as Allman and Woman.
As weird as those couple years in the wilderness were...Gregg still shone through. On this Music Friday, we offer a three-fer. Two songs from his appearance on the Cher show (where they reportedly began their brief and tumultuous relationship)...and, perhaps, my favorite solo track, played live on the David Letterman Show, "I'm No Angel."
Yeah, he may have stolen some diamonds...but he always brought home the gold. RIP.
God help me, I remember that album cover!

I used to have it framed on my wall. Always elicited a chuckle from guests.
