For most, he was best known as the host of the cheesy, country variety show "Hee Haw." From 1969 to 1993, the show was a mainstay on American TV, at times attracting 30 million viewers, and made Roy Clark a household name.
But, he was so much more than a campy, guitar-wielding TV star. Not unlike Glen Campbell, he was one bad-ass picker, equally adept at guitar and banjo. He was in high demand as a session musician, won the CMA's "Instrumentalist of the Year" award three times and scored a Grammy for best instrumental with "Alabama Jubilee."
Roy departed terra firma earlier this week. And, on this Music Friday, we honor his memory with one of his hottest performances, "Ghost Riders in the Sky" from a Branson show in the '90s.
He and Glen are likely having a blast, playing this weekend in that club in the Great Unknown.
Good one! Roy, Glen w/special guest Buck Owens. The man was corny, but the real deal with talent.
