Sammy Hagar and the Circle have just dropped the first single from the new album...and the opening riff jolted me back to the 1974 Montrose track "I Got the Fire."
For the uninitiated, Montrose was "Sam's" first signed band. And, while I always like to call out artists that rip off licks and riffs from others that have gone before...this sounds more like an homage to Ronnie Montrose, who sadly transitioned to another plain seven years ago. The opening riff of "Trust Fund Baby" seriously suggests "I Got the Fire" without being a complete copy. And the bridge sounds like a tribute to Tom Petty's "I Should Have Known It."
Somehow though, when a 70-something veteran samples, it's way cooler than when somebody in their 20s does. I guess it's about respect.
On this Music Friday, toggle between the three...and enjoy.
