I had a friend (who was sadly lost to me in the absurd loyalty line-drawing that happens after divorce) who was part of a rock band coming out of Madison in the mid '70s, managed by the same guy that was managing the then-unknown Cheap Trick out of Rockford. He told me that it was always a balancing act...and that finally that manager chose Cheap Trick.
I thought of my long lost friend when I heard that Gerry Marsden passed this week; the namesake of Gerry & the Pacemakers. The band emerged from Liverpool, managed by the same guy that was managing the Beatles. Ultimately, the Beatles emerged as the real deal, and rest is history.
But Gerry Marsden and his band created some great music during their era. On this Music Friday, we say farewell with one of their biggest. This is "Ferry Cross the Mersey."
Loved those songs. RIP Gerry
