I hopped into my rental car after facilitating a DMO Strategic Planning session in Ohio. A ZZ Top song sprang from the radio, set to Toledo's WXKR. I smiled as I pulled out of the parking lot. And then, another ZZ Top song...and another. And, I knew it wasn't good.
460 miles away, Terri got a notification on her phone. As she pulled up the story of Dusty's passing, her 3-year old grand daughter pointed to the screen shot and exclaimed, "ZZ Top." Yeah...good parenting at work.
While Billy Gibbons gets most of the notoriety as the voice of the band, Dusty Hill was the progenitor of ZZ Top. A recent Netfilx documentary is a must view for any rock or blues aficionado.
I met Dusty at an album release event in (of all places) the then-shuttered Playboy Club in Lake Geneva WI. He was one of the most genuine and gracious rock stars I ever met.
On this Music Friday, where to go to honor such a legend of the genre?
The first song most of us heard ("how how how how")? The borderline dirty lyrics with which they playfully teased rock radio standards?
Or my favorite? This is "I Gotsa Get Paid."
RIP (Rock in Perpetuity).
Ditto on the "good parenting" (kids gotta know the classics:) and the Netflix documentary (they worked their butts off for years to become an overnight success in the 80's). Feels like another part of my teenage and college years have faded away. R.I.P. Dusty
