Those who follow our Music Fridays (now approaching an amazing 600 posts) know by now that I'm a lyric guy. The mix tapes (well, CDs) that I shared with Terri as we began our odyssey together were all about the words and less about the music. There would be plenty of time to dance sweaty to a funky, chunky beat.
But, I must admit I was late to Tom Russell, one of the greatest lyricists in American music. A comment on his long form TV special nailed it: "The lyrical prowess of Tom Russell is so painfully under-appreciated in the world of American music and the American Songbook, that it is at times painful to listen to such a brilliant man. He wraps a tapestry of lyrical magic around you like a warm blanket, And he doesn’t let you go until you’re ready to fly."
The song that continues to grab me every time it shuffles forward is "Hurricane Season."
If there was a music video for this track, I can't find it. But, I don't need it. The video is all in my head...the mark of an exceptional lyricist.
Gimme another slice of lime.
