He is likely best known as a founding member of the Chicago-based Siegel-Schwall Band. But, for those of us in the Mad City, we believed Jim Schwall to be ours; so often that he played local clubs after moving here in the early '90s. He taught music at the University of Wisconsin, was an innovative photographer and even ran for Mayor in 2002.
But, his longtime musical partner in crime, Corky Siegel, probably said it best upon Jim's passing a few days ago: “People should know, Jim was a beautiful humanitarian and a one-of-a-kind musician."
On this Music Friday, we offer some less than professional video captures of Jim, Corky and their drummer Sam (who we also lost earlier this year)...but that's because video wasn't a thing when the Siegel-Schwall Band played with some of the best blues and rock artists of the '60s and '70s in some pretty sensational arenas.
Here's Jim with one of his Madison bands at the Barrymore with one of my faves: "You Do Too."
And, for fun, this is "I Think it Was the Wine."
If you want to go down the rabbit hole, here's 30 minutes from a benefit concert Jim played for our local community radio station at Madison's High Noon Saloon.
I know you've been living out in Arizona for the past few years...but, damn, we loved the days and nights you blessed us with your gift.
Godspeed Jim.
