Session musicians are typically heard but not known. That is put on clear display with the amazing book, The Wrecking Crew.
But David Lindley, who we lost last week, was different. His indelible imprint on the music of the singer-songwriters era of the 70s and 80s was nothing less than transcendent.
As his obit in Rolling Stone suggests, some of Jackson Browne's greatest songs would have still been great...but they became iconic with David's subtle sonic layering. Songs like "Before the Deluge," "Late for the Sky" and especially "Call it a Loan" were so sublimely superb with David's touch. And then, there is Jackson's tribute to Lowell George that David so completes.
But, we'll say farewell to this rare and reclusive talent with a song from his solo foray, El Rayo-X. This is "Mercury Blues."
Thanks, David. Sleep well.
Thank you for the introduction to David. Never heard his name, but definitely knew his sound.
