Most song writing duos in the rock era have been male (Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Bon Jovi/Sanbora, etc.). There are two that stand out that were male/female (Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil).
We lost Cynthia this past week...and we lost a lyricist of the highest order for the zeitgeist of her era. Really...check out the anthems she penned on this Music Friday:
"None of Us are Free," interpreted by Solomon Burke and the Blind Boys from Alabama.
"Shape of Things to Come," from the movie Wild in the Streets which, in retrospect, was an amazing look into the late '60s starring Christopher Jones and and very young Richard Pryor.
"We Gotta Get Outta This Place," the Animals classic, which became an anthem for those serving in Vietnam.
Then there were the ballads:
"Don't Know Much" and "Somewhere Out There," never better interpreted by Linda Ronstadt.
And the pop songs:
"Hungry" and "Kicks" for Paul Revere & the Raiders.
"On Broadway," the jazz standard...performed by AC/DC.
And, of course, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."
Sigh...the voice of a generation. RIP Cynthia.
